Abstract
The European Unions Water Framework Directive (WFD) calls for
an integrated management of waters on the basis of river basins.
To comply with these requirements, a comprehensive analysis of
the ecological and water management status of the respective river
basins must be carried out first. The dischange and treatment
of wastewaters play an important role in this respect, because
the quality of the receiving waters is determined to a large extent
by the way in which water management is organised and by the quality
of wastewater treatment. The paper describes the sewage engineering
and water management activities carried out in the catchment area
of the Pleisse River to illustrate how potential conflicts can
be identified and contained in the interest of water pollution
control and the users of the waters. A good ecological status
can be achieved if the sewage engineering measures according the
article 10 of the WFD can be successfully integrated into the
overall context of river basin management. |
