Swiss typographer Felix Arnold looks at typography in the context of map-making, highlighting the potential for new creative input by typographers. The article contains a brief history of lettering for cartography, comments on the currently available cartographic fonts, and delineates the differences between cartographic and text composition. Arnold specifies nine criteria that cartographic typefaces should meet and then discusses the merits of Cisalpin, a font created specifically for cartography.
