Abstract
The crack growth rate of styrene-butadiene rubber and acrylonitrile-butadiene
rubber, under dynamic tearing conditions, was determined using
a cyclic shear test applied to pre-cracked samples, before and
after swelling. The degree of swelling was controlled by varying
the swelling temperature and the swelling time. The crack growth
rates were higher for the swollen elastomers. The influence of
type of elastomer, degree of swelling, and crosslinking structure
on the fatigue crack behaviour of the swollen elastomers is discussed.
It is proposed that the variation of fatigue resistance in the
swollen state was due to a reduction in viscoelastic energy loss
and sharpening of the crack tip. 22 refs. |
