The codes appear in the Classification, CL=, field in an IDS record and, due to the interdisciplinary nature of much of the material covered, one record may have several classifications, e.g.:

Each code is prefaced by another two-character code that indicates in which database or equivalent printed abstracts
journal, the record originally appeared. These two-character codes correspond to the components of the ASFA series as follows:

- Q2 = ASFA 2: Ocean Technology, Policy & Non-Living Resources
