CSA Supports ASFA in Reaching Millionth Record

ASFA Celebrates Its Millionth Record

BETHESDA, Maryland, USA (27 October 2005) -- Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA), published and distributed by CSA, commemorated its millionth record at the opening of the ASFA Board Meeting in Rome, Italy.

The millionth ASFA record was submitted by the Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER), located in Centre de Brest, France. Ms Jacqueline Prod’homme, representing IFREMER, was presented with a commemorative plaque provided by CSA during the Opening Ceremony of the ASFA Board Meeting. (pictured)

"CSA is proud to be a part of this milestone for ASFA," said Matt Dunie, president of CSA. "Through our quarter century of working with ASFA, we have been committed to distributing ASFA information, taking full advantage of advances in technology and adding new features and capabilities. Our mission is to ensure that the information is delivered in the most useful, efficient way to the thousands of researchers worldwide who rely on it."

"Congratulations (of course) really go to all of the ASFA Partners who have been submitting ASFA input over the years, since 1971 --  thus enabling ASFA to reach the one million mark," said Mr. Ichiro Nomura, Assistant Director General, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Fisheries Department.

Overwhelmingly cited by a majority of aquatic science librarians as their primary database, ASFA is the premier reference in the field of aquatic resources. Input to ASFA is provided by a growing international network of information centers monitoring more than 5,000 serial publications, books, reports, conference proceedings, translations and limited distribution literature. ASFA is a component of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS), formed by four United Nations agency sponsors of ASFA and a network of international and national partners.

CSA works with ASFIS to disseminate the contents of ASFA. CSA makes the database available online through the CSA Illumina platform and also publishes ASFA journals in print format.
