CSA Acquires Community of Science, Inc.

Expanding CSA's Products for Research Institutions

BETHESDA, Maryland, USA (12 December 2005) -- CSA has acquired Community of Science (COS) a leading Internet site for the global R&D community. Over the last 15 years, COS has established itself as the leader in grant funding opportunities and researcher expertise information.

Community of Science, originally a spin-off of The Johns Hopkins University, facilitates the business of worldwide R&D. It represents more than 1,300 universities, associations, and other research institutions comprising more than 480,000 scholars and researchers. COS builds relevant, Web-enabled Expertise Management and content services to connect its members with scholarly information and resources. COS services include: COS Expertise, the inventory and network of detailed, first person profiles of scientists and scholars; COS Funding Opportunities ™, the largest inventory of currently available grant information; COS Abstract Management System ™, an online publishing and meeting management solution for universities and professional societies; and several research literature indexes.

While maintaining users' current access to the COS products, these products will also be integrated into CSA Illumina, CSA's highly acclaimed access platform. This year, CSA Illumina will have more than 180 million searches on 100 databases. Users will now have the most comprehensive combination of funding opportunities, literature indexes, and scholar profiles within a single service, CSA Illumina.

"The addition of COS Expertise complements our existing scholar profile partnership with Scholar Universe and puts us well on the way to releasing a product with more than 1,000,000 profiles of researchers from around the world. The funding opportunities products that COS produces will provide our customers with more relevant and valuable information in their pursuit of discovery," said Matt Dunie, President of CSA.

Jeff Baer, current President of COS, will continue to lead this organization as it becomes a division of CSA. Mr. Baer will report to Matt Dunie, and the COS offices are based in Baltimore, Maryland.

"This is an opportunity to focus on providing more relevant information that allows prominent scientists and researchers to communicate, exchange information, and find the people important to their work," reports Jeff Baer.

Named as an EContent top 100 company for 2005, CSA is a worldwide information company that serves as a guide to researchers to help them be more effective in their work by enabling and expediting discovery, aiding the management and organization of quality information, and providing tools to assist in its subsequent dissemination. CSA specializes in publishing and distributing in print and electronically 100 bibliographic and full-text databases and journals in four primary editorial areas: natural sciences, social sciences, arts & humanities, and technology. A privately held company, CSA is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, with offices throughout the U.S. and the world, including Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Europe and the United Kingdom. Researchers in more than 4,000 institutions worldwide use CSA's information resources, and CSA's print journals are used in more than 80 countries. CSA has been a leader in publishing and an innovator in the information field for over 30 years.

CSA is a division of Cambridge Information Group (CIG), a privately owned group of information services and publishing companies and educational institutions located around the world. CIG is also the parent company to R.R. Bowker, RefWorks, and Sotheby's Institute of Art.
