Environmental Impact Statements Now Available Through CSA

Unique resource provides access to both full-text statements and indexed digests

BETHESDA, MD (10 July 2006) -- Electronic access is now available to the full-text of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) through the CSA Illumina platform. The new collection Environmental Impact Statements: Full-Text & Digests is the only resource providing comprehensive electronic access to draft and final versions of all EISs issued by the U.S. federal government since 2003. Moreover, the collection also provides searchable access to digests of all EISs issued since 1985.

"We are very pleased to make this unique research resource available," said Boe Horton, chief operating officer of CSA. "It provides access to an extensive and important collection of environmental materials with global impact, backed by the power of the CSA Illumina platform."

Environmental impact statements result from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, requiring that U.S. federal agencies or anyone receiving federal funding to prepare detailed analyses of any of their actions that significantly affect the quality of the environment. As a result, EISs have been produced on virtually every type of activity, from oil and gas development to scientific research in Antarctica, and from protection of wildlife habitat to construction of light rail lines.

Although the reports generally detail U.S.-based situations, the problems and solutions have worldwide relevance. In recent years, EISs have looked increasingly at biodiversity -- most include a description of major habitats and a list of the plant and animal species present. EISs also pay particular attention to the presence of threatened species.

Environmental Impact Statements: Full-Text & Digests contains more than 1,700 full-text EISs and digests of more than 10,775 EISs. Researchers using the resource are uniquely able to precisely search the full-text of the EISs to retrieve specific information found in the text. In addition, the resource is backed by indexing and abstracting that delivers unified retrieval of like information. Areas covered in the database include:

  • Agricultural
  • Biological
  • Endangered Species
  • Energy
  • Geology
  • Hydrology
  • International
  • Meteorology
  • Pollution
  • Prevention
  • Spatial
  • Socio-Economic
  • State and Regional Issues
  • Wetlands
